Andare a vivere all’estero può essere un’esperienza meravigliosa. Talmente tanto che molti dicono che dovremmo tutti provare almeno una volta, dato che cosa c’è di meglio per vivere nuove avventure?
If you want to know new cultures, moving is the way to do it. Despite that, many of us don’t ever take this plunge, primarily due to technicalities and fears, with homesickness at the top of the list. We all love our home comforts, and moving abroad can (at least temporarily) remove them from our life, especially if we have to renovate the house we’re moving in. Renovation is not joke in our own country (as we saw in this post), so imagine abroad. There are plenty of handy guides out there which aim to help you alleviate homesickness, but, of course, this process will be a whole lot slower if you’re moving into a less than perfect house. In fact, abroad, the chances are that you’ll have one viewing before signing the contract. What’s worse, you can’t very well hop back and forth between this and your current property. Still, moving into a house which needs a whole load of work will make you miss home faster than you could imagine. That’s why we’re going to take a look at a few of the ways you can make that property a slice of home from day one. No one said it’d be easy, but nothing worth having ever was, right?

Se volete conoscere nuove culture, trasferirvi all’estero è il modo di farlo. Molti, però, non si buttano per tecnicismi e paure, nostalgia prima fra tutte. Tutti noi amiamo i comfort della nostra casa e andare a vivere all’estero può (anche solo temporaneamente) portarceli via, specialmente se la nuova abitazione richiede pure lavori di ristrutturazione. Ristrutturare è un’odissea già nel nostro paese (l’abbiamo visto qui) figurarsi all’estero. Esistono tantissime guide per combattere la nostalgia, ma diciamocelo, se si va a vivere in una casa che non è pronta potremmo soffrirne in men che non si dica. Intanto, solitamente, vedremo la casa una volta sola prima di entrarci. La ristrutturazione e il trasloco, poi, saranno difficili da gestire e il nostro coraggio iniziale sarà messo a dura prova. Ecco perché oggi vedremo insieme qualche modo per rendere la nuova abitazione “casa” prima del nostro arrivo. Nessuno dice che sarà facile, ma sicuro ne varrà la pena!

KEEP MONEY ASIDE // TENETE DA PARTE DEL DENARO
The first and most crucial point here is to keep money aside. I’m sure you knew it, right? Spending your life savings on a house is never a good idea: remember that you’ll need money left to get things the way you want them, so save on property and moving. For the property, it’s worth considering location to help keep those costs down. It may be that you have a country in mind, but if you don’t, consider those with cheap housing. Malaysia, for instance, is one of the cheapest countries in the world. You can bet you’ll have plenty spare if you look at properties like these ones in Kajang. Equally, Thailand and the Philippines may be worth your attention. If you have your heart set on a location, consider buying outside of tourist hot spots to save money but be sure about the neighborhood in terms of safety and services. Talking about moving, by getting rid of large pieces of furniture, you should be able to move with checked luggage. That’ll save you a fortune, every cent of which can go towards your house. // La prima cosa da fare è risparmiare. Strano, eh? Spendere i soldi di una vita in una casa non va bene: ne avrete bisogno per sistemarla e per altre cose, quindi risparmiate su proprietà e trasloco. Per la prima, considerate la location. Magari avete una destinazione in mente, altrimenti valutate paesi dove le case costano poco. La Malesia, ad esempio, è uno dei paesi più economici in termini di abitazioni, ma anche Tailandia e Filippine sono mete economiche (date un’occhiata a Kajang per avere un’idea dei prezzi). Se invece sapete dove andare, evitate le zone turistiche più costose, senza però dimenticarvi di controllare il quartiere in termini di sicurezza e servizi. Per il trasloco, poi, capite cosa è indispensabile portare e cosa invece potete acquistare in loco, liberandovi invece di tutto quello che non serve più!
HIRE CONTRACTORS // ASSUMETE UN APPALTATORE
It’s also worth hiring contractors before the big move day. That way, they can get in and do any renovation work before you’re due to move in. This may seem like a risk, but technology is a beautiful thing. You can easily share your vision with your chosen company online, or even using video calls. At the very least, you could email them copies of your sketches, and ask for picture updates so you know what’s going on. This could be a lifesaver for stopping those initial feelings of regret. All you need to do is find a company with decent reviews, and explain the situation to them so that they know what you’re after. This doesn’t mean there won’t be problems but is there a single thing easy in this life? 😀 // Contattare un’impresa che faccia tutti i lavori di ristrutturazione prima del vostro arrivo è un’ottima idea. Potrebbe sembrare un rischio, ma ormai con la tecnologia si può fare tutto. Potete contattare l’impresa online, con video chiamate, mail e addirittura inviare progetti e schizzi via whatsapp. Dovete semplicemente sceglierne una con buone recensioni (mi raccomando!) e spiegare bene cosa volete. Non vuol dire che non ci saranno problemi, ma c’è qualcosa di facile in questa vita? 😀
GET SOMEONE ON THE GROUND // TROVATE QUALCUNO DEL POSTO
If you have this possibility and it helps to put your mind at ease, you could even opt for this. If you have a friend in the area of your new property, you’ll find this process much more manageable. Having someone on the ground ensures they can keep an eye on things. This is especially useful if you’re getting work done: they’ll be able to stop by the building site and get an accurate idea of how things are going, they can then report back to you about any issues, as well as giving contractors an incentive to stay on track. Having a friend on the ground also allows you to wire them money if you need help picking some things up before moving in, something totally game changer! // Se ne avete la possibilità e volete stare tranquilli, potete trovare un conoscente del posto che possa seguire i lavori da vicino. Avere qualcuno sul posto può aiutarvi a non perdere nulla dei lavori, a risolvere ogni eventuale problema più facilmente e a mettere fretta all’impresa senza che impieghi troppo tempo a finire. In più, potete anche inviare del denaro per iniziare ad acquistare mobili o altre cose per la vostra casa, ma questo dipende molto della disponibilità del vostro amico!

Lastly, it’s worth looking out for furniture which you can order online. This is a wonderful benefit which you would be mad not to take advantage of. Think about it; you’re only going to feel all the more homesick when you arrive in a house with no bed. By ordering online, though, you can schedule furniture to arrive on the same day as you do. If they’re willing, you could even ask that friend if they would mind popping over to receive deliveries for you. That way, your home in this new destination will be fit for habitation the moment you walk through the door. Your bed will be up in your bedroom fit for your first night and your chairs will be ready and waiting for you, something that will make you feel at home. In short; the more prepared you are, the better chance you have of feeling settled. // Infine, acquistare mobili online è un qualcosa da valutare se non volete pentirvi poi. Pensateci: arrivare nella casa nuova e non trovare nemmeno il letto. Nostalgia al massimo. Acquistate tutto e fatelo arrivare quando arrivate voi (o affidatevi al solito amico che ormai merita il titolo di bff). Una volta arrivati, troverete il letto e le sedie e vi sentirete (anche solo un poco) a casa. Insomma, partire preparati è assolutamente vincente.
