HOW TO: SET UP THE CHRISTMAS EVE NIGHT AT HOME

howto christmaseve setup lifestyle francinesplaceblog

When it comes to Christmas, I take things really seriously.

Christmas is with no doubt my favourite time of the year, yes, like ahem, I start thinking about the next the 26th of December.

//

I could say I am a biiit Christmas junkie, but the atmosphere those days has no equal. The first of December, to me the Christmas time gets officially started and yay to Christmas movies, cartoons, sweets, decorations and whatever. Because, like poet Lessing said, “to await a pleasure, is itself a pleasure”. Anyway, my favourite day ever is the 24th of December. Usually I wake up in the morning, have breakfast watching a Christmas movie (99% of times: a serious movie Mickey’s Christmas Carol), rigorously on the couch with a blanket, then I go to my grandma’s home to prepare the table and the decorations for the dinner. To me, decorating the Christmas Eve table is like bringing the Olympic flame: a big responsibility to be proud of. On Christmas Eve all the family is reunited and we are about 20 persons, so I always try to do my best to create the right atmosphere. I am here, today, to show you my personal steps for setting up the Christmas Eve, but, of course, the most important thing is the people you will spend it with. Because a beautiful table or tree can help, but it is love that does the magic!

//

IN THE AFTERNOON // IL POMERIGGIO

1)

A BIG TABLE // UNA GRANDE TAVOLA

A big table is the key to have all the family reunited. If you, like us, are too many and one table is not enough, add another one, but like it is one only, bigger, table.

2)

SET UP THE TABLE // APPARECCHIARE LA TAVOLA

Your most beautiful table cloth, dishes, glasses and cutlery. On Christmas Eve nothing is too much! The important is how you put them on the table. Of course, on Christmas Eve you are supposed to be with your beloveds (family, friends, pets), so you don’t have to be too formal while setting up the table, but this doesn’t mean that you can be careless. A beautiful table will make your guests feel welcome and comfortable,  because the right atmosphere is so important!

3)

PLACEHOLDERS // SEGNAPOSTO

You could think that they are useless and I would agree with you, unless you have 20 persons to place and they are from 8 to 80+ years old! I usually opt for mixing the ages, but keeping in mind who will be the persons going back and forth from the kitchen, so I leave their places near to it. If you have no time enough to make diy placeholders, but don’t want to renounce a Christmas touch on your table, see the ones I did here, they are SO easy and quick to make! Yes, like that you can do them even now.

4)

DECORATIONS // DECORAZIONI

You can add all the decorations you want to the room, but not the floral ones yet (it is too early and you don’t want that your flowers look like spiritless in the evening!) and not too many. The livingroom (or kitchen or whatever) doesn’t have to look like a kitsch Christmas fair!

Sorry, I have this thing with chandeliers… // Scusate, ho questa cosa per i lampadari…

5)

YOUR DRESS // IL VOSTRO VESTITO

Oh, yes. We talk about dresses! Celebrating with your family doesn’t mean that you can have dinner in your pijamas. I like choosing dresses by the occasion and, on Christmas Eve night, I like wearing sheer tops with black pants, or skirts with romantic sweaters and so on. This year I would opt for a beautiful red dress, so I checked out the site promtimes.co.uk for an inspiration. They have fabulous evening dresses, also with affordable prices if your wallet is screaming vengeange, in all the colours, from pink (I LOVE pink!) to the classic red (I fell in love with this one). Because a beautiful dress will be perfect even if you will decide, after the dinner, to go out for a sparkling glass of Prosecco!

6)

TABLE CENTREPIECE // CENTROTAVOLA

Christmas centrepiece is essential to decorate the table. My aunt is the floral artist of the family and I always wait for her beautiful compositions to give the final touch to the table. If you have not a talented aunt who prepares the centrepieces, remember a) yes yes yes to fresh flowers and sprigs b) be careful with candles, they are so beautiful but not the right choice if you have very young babies at your table (or if your uncle loves to drink and to gesticulate, maybe even at the same time) c) okay to red, gold, silver, green and white colors d) don’t make them too big or you won’t have space for the food  e) prepare them in the morning/afternoon and leave them in a fresh place (not your fridge!) and away from others’ hands f) put the centrepiece on the table just before guests’ arrival!

7)

APPETIZERS // ANTIPASTI

You will put the appetizers on the table few minutes before guests arrival, the same for each table (if you have more than 1), so that people won’t have to spend the half of time asking for this or that. In my family, my mom and my aunts cook the main courses, so my task ends here.

Now that everything is done, you can enjoy some deserved relax and the beautiful time with your beloveds. Until the dishes washing haha! Hope you enjoyed the photos from my last Christmas Eves (since 2010!). I wish you a super lovely Christmas Eve and Merry Christmas, my dears!
